Hi right i have found a very reasonable priced 1997 rover cooper MPI engine and gearbox would it be possible to fit this to my 1984 998cc mayfair? I spoke to the local garage guy i use for the mini and he said i would be able to convert the mpi engine to a carburettor one using parts off of my existing 998cc engine is this possible? as i would rather not have all the ecu computer parts on it and some of the wiring loom is missing from the engine.

When your garage suceeds in doing this conversion let me know beacause this may be the breakthrough we have all been waiting for. As I understand things, it would be impossible to do without thounds of pounds being spent on converting it, an mpi has lots of censors such as the one on the crank which tells the coil pack when to work also the other censors with the ecu control all the air and petrol flow through the injectors. The best solution would be to look at a 1275cc carb version, which we might be able to help with as I have just this.

There was a converted car at Mini Mail the other week. To say it was a bit of a bodge is being polite.
The SPi is a doddle to turn into a carb'd car, but the MPi is a tad more difficult due to lack of a dizzy. The sensors can be disconnected or removed, but the coil pack is harder to overcome.
I have a very nice freshly rebuilt complete MG metro engine & gearbox with all the ancilliaries if you are desperate for more power.

also i think its possible that my garage is getting the mpi confused with the spi. he is a little absent minded sometimes.
