here we're celebs in the local area!!! wsfp local paper put this about us!!!
MINEHEAD duo Alexander Neville-Payne and Kerry Webber will be making the most of the longest day of the year - by driving the length of Britain.
The two friends will be undertaking their own Summer Solstice Challenge and driving 850 miles between John O’Groats in Scotland and Lands End in Cornwall in just one day.
They hope to complete the dawn to dusk adventure in a vintage 1980s’ Classic Mini Clubman Estate in around 17 hours.
Although it will be the first driving challenge for Kerry, 18, it is the second four-wheeled feat for Alexander, 21, who last year joined Jamie Short to drive 2,500 miles across Europe to raise money for local children’s charity CLOWNS.
This time, the route may be shorter, but he is still hoping to raise cash for a good cause, the charity Cancer Research UK.
The charity is particularly close to Alexander’s heart having lost his uncle to lung cancer about 18 months ago and his father to cancer of the colon some 12 months later.
The journey will also be somewhat of a challenge for his yellow Mini, which only recently broke down on a slightly shorter trip to Taunton!
He said: “Keeping a 30-year-old car going for 850 miles from the top of Britain to the bottom in one day will be a huge challenge in itself.
“Even with just a few weeks left until the run, we still have so much to do to make it capable of doing such an epic adventure.”
The pair aim to set off from John O’Groats at sunrise at 4am on June 21 and reach journey’s end in Cornwall before 9.30pm on the same day.
Kerry said: “The drive will be mentally challenging as we expect it to take about 15 hours to cover the 850 miles between the top and bottom tip of Britain, though it all depends on the traffic.
“We have also allowed an extra two and a half hours to stop for fuel, food and toilet breaks.
“But we will still be travelling against the clock in a bid to get to Cornwall before the sun sets.”
The friends have been charting their progress online on both Facebook and the website www.justgiving.com.
Dawn Harrison, area volunteer manager for Cancer Research UK, said: “Alex and Kerry have taken on a pretty tough endurance run.
“To drive such a distance is a tough order in itself, but to complete the journey in one day - even though it is the longest day - will take a lot of stamina.
“Supporting Cancer Research UK on top of everything else they have to contend with is truly admirable.”
Alexander and Kerry have already raised almost £200 towards their £1,000 target and donations can been made online via www.justgiving.com/Alexander-Neville-Payne.
